Police arrested a Brampton man in Midland after they say a shoplifting investigation escalated to an assault, with a broken golf club and metal bar seized.

Provincial police were called to a convenience store Tuesday morning on Midland Avenue for a report about a shoplifter.

Officers attended and say they took a 40-year-old man into custody after he was “creating a disturbance and interacting with a number of individuals in the downtown core area.”

Police allege the man resisted and assaulted officers.

He faces criminal charges, including assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or harm, and theft under $5,000, among others.

He was held in custody to await a bail hearing.
